Kongsberg buys 3 satellites from NanoAvionics for dual AIS/radar maritime surveillance service

PARIS — Norway’s Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has ordered three micro-satellites (50-150 kg at launch) from Lithuania’s NanoAvionics as part of a planned constellation to monitor maritime traffic through AIS coupled with a new radar signal detection sensor.

The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) designed the radar sensor to analyze vessels’ use of radar. A demonstration model was launched in April 2021 with the Norsat-3 AIS satellite.

The other payload is an Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder . . .
