EU Commission revives idea of a military version of Copernicus Earth observation network

PARIS— Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has revived European Commission interest in adding a security/defense component to the Copernicus environment-monitoring network that ultimately could be separated from the main Copernicus program.

Nothing has been decided so far, and while the Commission’s 2021-2027 Copernicus budget of 5.4 billion euros ($5.4 billion) may seem large, it still falls short of what the Commission had hoped to provide as its two-thirds share of the program’s funding.
