ESA expands Iris2 network’s low-LEO segment, will reimburse non-recurring costs of scaling tech for constellations

BRUSSELS — Preparation for the European Commission’s Iris2 secure communications constellation has motivated the European Space Agency (ESA) to broaden Iris2’s low-LEO component to give industry the chance to propose payloads and satellite designs that could be used for the operational Iris2 network.

In a separate decision, ESA has agreed to reimburse nonrecurring engineering expenses for companies that need help not with a new product, but with scaling that product for constellation-level production rates.
