Yahsat to purchase majority stake in UAE mobile satellite operator Thuraya; strategy unclear

BERLIN — United Arab Emirates-based satellite fleet operator Yahsat, which has already demonstrated an ambition to expand into Africa and Latin America, has agreed to purchase a majority stake in mobile satellite services provider Thuraya, the two companies announced April 26.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The decision keeps Thuraya in UAE hands and gives Yahsat an L-band, geostationary-orbit mobile communications portfolio in addition to its C-, Ku- and Ka-band fleet.
