LA PLATA, Maryland — Airbus Defence and Space has invested more at-risk capital in the geospatial imagery business than any other European company, often running ahead of the market — and ahead of the French and European military — in committing to high-resolution optical systems without any promise of government contracts.
The contracts eventually came, but it has not been smooth sailing. In December 2022, two Airbus Pleiades Neo satellites were destroyed in the failure of a European Vega rocket.
