PARIS — The Viasat purchase of Inmarsat gives the industry the big-player horizontal consolidation it has been expecting and, like a multi-player board game, will pressure SES, Eutelsat, EchoStar/Hughes, Iridium and others to reassess their strategy.

The need for scale in what is still a dispersed global industry has been known for years. It was the reason why EchoStar/Hughes made a bid for Inmarsat in 2018. Inmarsat did not like the terms, but the reasoning of EchoStar Chairman . . .
