LA PLATA, Maryland — SpaceX Starlink satellites performed 144,404 collision-avoidance maneuvers in the six months ending May 30, well above the rate reported for the previous six-month period, but the company also lowered its threshold for performing the maneuvers, making conclusions about the orbital environment difficult to assess.
Also contributing to the problem is that few satellite constellation operators provide regular accounts of their satellites’ life in orbit.
During this period, Starlink Gen 1 satellites performed 59,414 collision avoidance maneuvers and Gen 2 satellites . . .
