LA PLATA, Maryland— Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney proposed that Australia become part of Telesat’s Lightspeed LEO constellation of broadband satellites as part of a deeper integration of the two countries’ sovereign defense capabilities, but it’s unclear whether Australia is ready to make the commitment.

Australia is one of several nations that on the surface should be excellent candidates for integration into Lightspeed. Britain and Japan are two others.
