Satellite-to-smartphone startups AST SpaceMobile, Lynk Global await FCC OKs to move forward; AST goes to Spain

PARIS — Two startups planning global constellations of low-orbiting satellites to connect directly with unmodified smartphones, having concluded initial proofs of concept, are waiting for U.S. regulatory approval to move forward toward commercial service.

AST SpaceMobile in 2019 announced it had successfully established a data link between the equivalent of a cell phone in low Earth orbit and a simulated AST SpaceMobile satellite at the company’s Texas facility.

On Feb. 8, competitor Lynk Global announced that it had succeeded its on pre-commercial . . .
