Iridium reports record EBITDA, $50M Aireon investment; teases market with direct-to-smartphone agreement

PARIS — Mobile satellite services provider Iridium Communications deepened its involvement in the increasingly popular effort to develop direct links between low-orbiting satellites and the world’s smartphones by disclosing a development agreement with an unnamed partner.

Iridium Chief Executive Matt Desch and Chief Financial Officer Thomas J. Fitzpatrick spent much of a July 26 investor call playing “Let us Tease You,” declining to offer details on the agreement that was struck,  including its duration or scope.
