A model for Europe? Japan MoD prepares 5-year, $1.8-billion satellite reconnaissance network to be owned by private sector

LA PLATA, Maryland — Japan’s Ministry of Defense will enter into negotiations with a seven-company consortium led by Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Sky Perfect JSat and Mitsui & Co. Ltd to build an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance satellite constellation that will operate as a commercial business while reserving imagery for Japan’s defense forces.

Japan’s Defense Ministry has budgeted 282.2 billion Japanese yen ($1.81 billion) to the project, with much of the funding devoted to the purchase of imagery over five years . . .
