UK MoD: Future geostationary milsatcom layer seems clear, still hunting for allied/commercial MEO and LEO options

LA PLATA, Maryland — The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), which in 2023 ended the 20-year Skynet 5 Private Finance Initiative, under which Airbus Defence and Space built and operated the ministry’s Skynet fleet of telecommunications satellites, is now looking for ways to add non-MoD-owned capacity for its future capacity.

The ministry has tentatively scheduled to spend 5 billion British pounds ($6.7 billion) over 10 years on the next-generation Skynet system. How firm this figure is with the new UK government remains . . .
