Living every rocket builder’s nightmare, Avio’s CEO faces the music

PARIS — Any rocket company chief executive must have nightmares about this: You’re alone in the public docket having to explain a failure for which the only credible cause lies inside your own house.

The question then is: Do you face the music, or try to change the tune?

For Avio SpA Chief Executive Giulio Ranzo, that day came on Dec. 18 during a press briefing on the Nov. 17 failure of the Avio-designed, Avio-built Vega rocket.
