Astranis: We can replace defective inaugural mini-GEO satellite by year-end. Will insurers agree?

TUPPER LAKE, NY — Astranis Space Technologies’ inaugural GEO-orbit small satellite is insured for $40 million and likely will be the subject of an claim — whether for partial or total loss is not clear — following the failure of its on-board solar array drive assembly, industry officials said.

The failure was a surprise given Astranis’s statements since the April 30 launch of the satellite, called Arcturus, as one of three passengers on a SpaceX Heavy rocket. The company said all systems were working as planned.
