Telesat: Q1 revenue down 23%, operating income down 53%; Lightspeed LEO backlog, buoyed by Viasat, nears $800M

LA PLATA, Maryland — Satellite fleet operator Telesat of Canada reported a 23% decline in revenue and a 53% decline in operating income for the three months ending March 31 following reductions in its broadcast and rural-broadband business but said backlog for its Lightspeed LEO broadband constellation, to enter service in 2027, had increased to nearly 1.1 billion Canadian dollars, or $796.4 million at current exchange rates.

The increase in Lightspeed backlog was almost entirely attributable to a multi-year contract with GEO-orbit broadband provider
