SES cancels 2 software-defined GEO satellites in synergy move, struggles with O3b mPower insurance claim

JAKARTA — Satellite fleet operator SES has canceled contracts for two software-defined GEO-orbit satellites as part of a broad cost-cutting exercise in the wake of its purchase of Intelsat.

The company had said before the merger’s close in July 2025 that maintaining the combined Intelsat-SES fleet of 95 geostationary-orbit satellites would not be necessary.

The two satellites are the IS-41 and IS-44 satellites contracted with manufacturer Thales Alenia Space in January 2022 and scheduled to provide . . .
