Partnering with China, Algeria is latest nation with its own telecommunications satellite

PARIS — The China Great Wall Industry Corp. (CGWIC) on Dec. 11 successfully placed Algeria’s first telecommunications satellite, Alcomsat-1, into geostationary transfer orbit in the latest example of a Chinese-managed entry of a developing nation into satellite telecommunications.

CGWIC said the China Long March 3B rocket, operating from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, placed the 5,225-kilogram Alcomsat-1 into an orbit with an apogee of 41,991 kilometers and a perigee of 200 kilometers, with an inclination of 26.4 degrees relative to the equator.
