European missile maker MBDA on assuring a sovereign, interoperable space defense network

BRUSSELS — European missile maker MBDA, a successful joint venture of French, German, British and Italian companies created in 2001, offers a template for how European military space programs can move from siloed national efforts to a fully interoperable and coordinated network.

An integrated system of systems is the goal of Europe’s Iris2 multi-orbit secure communications constellation and the associated European Earth Observation Governmental Service (EOGS), which aims to pool existing national intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance satellites to offer a service to EU nations.
