ESA signs $140M contract with Avio for higher-power Vega-E rocket, with LOX/methane upper stage, to fly in 2025

PARIS — The European Space Agency (ESA) and Vega medium-lift rocket prime contractor Avio SpA signed a contract for $140 million for the further development of a third iteration of the medium-lift Vega rocket, this one with a liquid oxygen/methane fueled upper stage, to fly in 2025.

The contract, for 118.8 million euros, was expected following the November 2019 conference of ESA’s 22 governments, during which a Vega Evolution program was subscribed at a level of 160 million euros.
