ESA refers December data breach case to France’s public prosecutor for criminal inquiry

LA PLATA, Maryland — The European Space Agency (ESA) has referred December’s breach of cybersecurity to the French Public Prosecutor’s office for criminal investigation but has confirmed its earlier assessment that the breach was limited to unclassified data from external services outside ESA’s firewall.

A known dark-web data broker, “888,” took responsibility for the breach, alleging that it included 200 GB of “highly sensitive data from ESA’s infrastructure and development systems” and offering to sell it.
