Arctic Weather Satellite, a test case for ESA’s adoption of New Space methods, is meeting its milestones

LA PLATA, Maryland — One of the early test cases to demonstrate whether the European Space Agency (ESA) can adapt itself to New Space working methods will be the Arctic Weather Satellite (AWS), designed as a prototype that would expand to a constellation managed by Europe’s 30-nation Eumetsat.

Early results: So far, so good. Three years after ESA signed a contract with OHB Sweden as satellite prime contractor, the finished AWS has been shipped to Germany for testing by IABG. The OHB Sweden contract was valued at 32.5 . . .
