Sincerest flattery: Airbus says Maxar’s right on geospatial market & NewSpacers Planet, BlackSky et al are wrong

PARIS — Airbus Defence and Space spent $800 million on four 30-cm-resolution Pleiades Neo optical imaging satellites on the thesis that Maxar Technologies has it right, and the many NewSpace imaging constellations have it wrong.

The most lucrative and the fastest-growing share of the Earth observation market, Airbus has concluded, is for very-high-resolution spacecraft. Advances in ground-based artificial intelligence, the cloud and Big Data have only reinforced the trend, broadening demand beyond military applications into the private sector.
