ITU chief: We probably need to adopt binding regulations on orbital debris, collsion risk

PARIS — The secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) said it’s probably necessary to establishing binding regulations to mitigate the threat of orbital debris and in-orbit collisions because voluntary commitments and guidelines will not do the job.

Doreen Bogdan-Martin, who has been the head of the 193-nation ITU since early January 2023, said the increase in satellite population in low Earth orbit up to now is as nothing compared to what’s already been submitted to the ITU to register orbital slots and radio frequencies in . . .
