Iridium dismisses markets’ swooning over satellite-to-smartphone idea, but says it’ll do the same thing, eventually

PARIS — Mobile satellite services provider Iridium Communications Inc. reported unexpectedly robust Q3 revenue and EBITDA, raised its forecast for full-year results and teased investors with the idea that mass-market smartphones will indeed one day be connected by satellite for anywhere-you-want usage.

Iridium Chief Executive Matt Desch's diplomacy has been tested in recent months with new companies promising direct-to-standard-smartphone links (AST SpaceMobile, Lynk Global) and by a brief rumor that Apple was about to integrate mobile satellite service . . .
