Indian government sees space situational awareness as sovereignty requirement, and a commercial opportunity

PARIS — Indian government officials said they were preparing to ramp up their domestic space situational awareness (SSA) and space traffic management (STM) capabilities with ground- and space-based sensors to boost national autonomy and also to spur commercial industry development.

They also said stricter international regulations were needed to reign in unsustainable behavior in low Earth orbit.

One official even suggested that India might wish to follow the U.S. example in declaring a moratorium on anti-satellite missile tests.
