French launcher startup Latitude: Coming to terms with the fact that its government has a favorite, and it’s not them

LA PLATA, Maryland — In March 2024 the French government announced grant/contract awards to four launcher startups as part of the France 2030 development program.

It seemed odd that one of them, ArianeGroup-owned MaiaSpace, received three-quarters of the 400 million euros ($470 million) in contract commitments. The other three — Latitude and HyPrSpace in the smaller weight class; and Sirius Space Services in the heavier class— divided the remaining 100 million euros.
