EU governments cut proposed 7-year space budget by 20%, EU Defence Fund by 53%

PARIS — European Union governments are negotiating a new seven-year funding package that sharply scales back previously planned increases in space and defense.

The new budget, proposed by the Finnish presidency of the European Union Council and accepted at the council’s Dec. 12-13 meeting, is still subject to change under the principle that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.”

But at a time of financial pressure on many EU governments, and given that the United Kingdom’s participation in any EU program . . .
