EU Commission, with Russia’s Ukraine invasion as tailwind, wants civil space to have more military use

PARIS — The European Commission has been calling for the elimination of barriers between space and military programs for well over a year. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has provided a strong tailwind for the effort.

Aside from using budget mechanisms, the Commission has proposed that the now decidedly civil Copernicus Earth observation program — with worldwide “full, free and open access” to its data — is being fitted with a military application.

It’s not clear how this will be done. Ideas being floated include hosted military . . .
