Covid-19 shows how badly Hughes & Viasat need their new satellites, but it may also delay their launch

PARIS — The surge in consumer bandwidth demand with Covid-19 stay-at-home policies in the United States is a reminder of how badly Hughes Network Systems and Viasat Inc. need their follow-on satellites, which before the pandemic were scheduled to launch in 2021.

Are those schedules still valid? Hughes and Viasat both declined to respond to specific queries about their respective satellites, Jupiter 3 in the case of EchoStar Corp.’s Hughes and the first Viasat 3 for Viasat.
