AT&T says direct-to-home television provider DirecTV will no longer buy satellites

PARIS – AT&T said its DirecTV direct-to-home satellite-television division will not order any further satellites as the company moves to fiber and wireless-broadband distribution in the United States.

The announcement, while consistent with the company’s recent investment strategy and the erosion of its satellite-TV subscriber base, offered nonetheless striking commentary on the state of satellite broadcasting in the United States.
