Viasat outlines L-band direct-to-cell opportunity coming with Inmarsat purchase

PARIS — The value of UK-based mobile satellite services provider Inmarsat to Viasat Inc. has been buoyed by the possibility of using Inmarsat’s L-band spectrum for direct satellite-to-smartphone connections.

Establishing links, even weak ones, between low-orbiting satellites and mass-produced smartphones is one of the most exciting ideas in the satcom world. The companies planning such services have been divided between those that want to use mobile satellite operators’ terrestrial spectrum to close the link, and those opting to leverage spectrum already in use . . .
