Spanish government approves ~50% increase in ESA spending for seven years starting in 2020

PARIS — The Spanish government restated its intention to sharply increase its investment in the 22-nation European Space Agency (ESA), a decision that likely would confirm Spain’s place as ESA’s fifth-largest national contributor.

Meeting Nov. 8, just two days before national elections and three weeks before ESA’s triennial ministerial conference, the Spanish Council of Ministers agreed to boost Spain’s current ESA budget by about 50% over the period from 2020 to 2026.
