Satellite service providers, squeezed by customers and suppliers, navigate through a disruptive period

CARSAC DE GURSON, France — Whatever the orbit — GEO, MEO or LEO — broadband satellite networks are shifting more ground-segment responsibility to satellite operators and away from service providers.

At the other end, these service providers’ customers are increasingly asking for bundled contracts in which they lease both the satellite capacity and the user-equipment.

That puts the onus on the service provider to figure out what to do with the hardware once the lease is up, all the while contending with the fact that renewing customers want more service . . .
