LA PLATA, Maryland — Two recent satellite collision alerts — one involving Malaysia and North Korea, the other between Britain and China — may illustrate why voluntary cooperation among satellite operators will never be enough to assure the long-term sustainability of low Earth orbit.
Like it or not, it will probably take a globally accepted set of regulations administered by an agency such as the United Nations.
“This is a matter of trust,” said Aarti Holla-Maini, director of the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)
