by Peter B. de Selding

PARIS — The Luxembourg parliament on April 16 approved a government proposal to launch a high-resolution optical reconnaissance satellite that would have both military and commercial missions.

The project, called the National Advanced Optical System (NAOS), includes a single satellite with a ground sampling distance sharper than 50 centimeters and an operational life of seven to 10 years.

The NAOS program budget is 170 million euros ($210 million) over 14 years, a period to include the satellite’s expected four-year development.
