Iridium CEO on why the Qualcomm D2D partnership collapsed, and the company’s new standards-based offer

PARIS — Mobile satellite service provider Iridium Communications Inc. Chief Executive Matt Desch detailed Iridium’s new standards-based direct-to-device offer to chipmakers , smartphone and other platform manufacturers and explained why Iridium’s proprietary effort with Qualcomm came apart.

In a Jan. 10 briefing from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where a year ago Desch and Qualcomm were celebrating their partnership, Desch said he had assumed that Android handset makers would want to mount a quick response to Apple’s text/SOS . . .
