WASHINGTON — If 2017 was terrible for the commercial satellite market in general, with just seven or eight geostationary-orbit telecom satellites ordered, it was also a year in which Airbus’s satellite division hired 1,000 new people.

Such is the virtue of a diversified product line. In addition to battling Maxar Technologies’ SSL as the most successful manufacturer of commercial telecom satellites in recent years, Airbus has also been investing in its Earth observation business.
