Galileo July outage caused by ‘mishandling & improper installation of equipment’ during system upgrade, inquiry concludes

BANGKOK — An independent review of the week-long outage of Europe’s Galileo positioning, navigation and timing system in July has concluded that mishandling of equipment installed temporarily during an upgrade of the network’s ground segment, plus defective installation of equipment was the cause of the outage.

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, known as DG-Grow, said the independent review submitted its conclusions on Nov. 4.
