France’s DGA arms procurement agency outlines next-gen milsatcom commercial sales strategy, ground segment

LONDON — The French arms procurement agency, DGA, expects French satcom bandwidth demand to double every five years, forcing the agency to purchase oversized satellites and then to lease out capacity until its own demand catches up.

The two Syracuse-4 X- and military-Ka-band satellites under construction by Thales Alenia Space and Airbus Defence and Space, to be launched in 2021 and 2022, have aggregate capacity far beyond what French forces will need until around 2030.
