FCC offers up Dish satellite-deorbit fine as a warning, wades into satellite-to-cell debate

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California — When two senior Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officials attend an industry conference to trumpet a first-ever fine levied on a satellite operator for not properly retiring its satellite, you know something has changed.

That was the case here Oct. 17 when FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel and Julie Kearney, chief of the newly formed FCC space bureau, outlined the FCC’s space priorities here during Silicon Valley Space Week, organized by Satnews Events.
The fine of $150,000, announced Oct. 2, is a minor event for Dish Operating LLC
