Europe’s ‘last supper:’ ESA telecom chief urges startups to merge. ‘There’s not enough funding to support all of you’

AMSTERDAM — The European Space Agency (ESA) is not the US Defense Department and Laurent Jaffart, ESA’s director of connectivity and secure communications, is not the US Secretary of Defense.

But Jaffart’s warning to Europe’s startup space companies here March 28 nonetheless strongly resembled what the US Defense Secretary told US contractors in 1993 at what Lockheed Martin CEO Norm Augustine later called “the last supper”:

There are too many of you: Merge or face going out of business.
