Euratom contract with Tractebel consortium may move Europe forward on nuclear space applications

PARIS — Is Europe finally getting serious about developing nuclear batteries for long-term space missions alongside its role in the NASA-led Artemis program and Europe’s satellite missions further out in the solar system?

It’s too soon to say, but the decision by the European Union’s Euratom agency to contract with a consortium led by nuclear engineering specialist Tractebel and including ArianeGroup and Airbus Defence and Space is at least a move in that direction.
