EU Parliament approves Iris2 secure satcom constellation; SpaceX Starlink in Ukraine a motivator, Musk the villain

PARIS — The European Union’s Iris2 space-based secure connectivity program will begin issuing bid requests to European industry in March for the network’s different components following the overwhelming approval by the European Parliament.

The Parliament’s Feb. 14 endorsement of program — 603 in favor, six against and 39 abstentions — came just 12 months after the initial proposal to spend 2.4 billion euros ($2.57 billion) between 2023 and 2027, including 430 million euros from the Horizon Europe research program and 220 million . . .
