ESA, ITU officials tell satellite sector to accept spectrum sharing and get smart about WRC-19 lobbying

BRUSSELS, Belgium — The European Space Agency (ESA) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) delivered a clear message to the satellite sector heading into November’s World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-19): Spectrum sharing is the top priority, and the space sector needs to bring all its friends to the table.

The quadrennial WRC is where radio spectrum and orbital-slot rights are allocated and disputes resolved. The four-week WRC-19, to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, is all but certain to feature disputes between terrestrial and satellite interests.
