EchoStar, with $3.25 billion in cash, laments moribund FSS sector and lack of M&A targets

PARIS — EchoStar Corp.’s chief strategy officer, sounding like a pallbearer, had this to say about the FSS geostationary-orbit satellite sector in which EchoStar is a long-standing player:

“The traditional FSS industry is in sort of a standstill because of uncertainties involving spectrum access as well as the impact the developments in the terrestrial networks will have on the traditional geostationary business.

“Looking at the business through a historical lens is not a good view, because the geostationary business is done right now. Other than specific applications . . .
