Commercial slowdown means Europe’s space sector more dependent than ever on government business

PARIS — Europe’s space industry, which historically has relied as much on commercial sales as on government business, is now more dependent than ever on government budget cycles to maintain its revenue and employment base.

The trend toward a larger government role in European space-sector revenue has been gradual as budgets at the 22-nation European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission increased.

But with the current upheaval in the commercial market and the reduced commercial sales, the picture in 2018 showed Europe . . .
