AST SpaceMobile says its satellite has shown 4G/5G broadband capability; financing challenge remains

PARIS — Startup satellite-to-unmodified smartphone broadband service provider AST SpaceMobile said the company’s in-orbit BlueWalker 3 satellite has shown signal strength “sufficient to support 4G and 5G data speeds” and that a full test program demonstrating the capacity is imminent.

AST announced in April that it had successful established a two-way voice call using AT&T spectrum with an off-the-shelf Samsung Galaxy phone and other devices, giving the company confidence that its design choices were on target.
