ArianeGroup CEO on Ariane 6 rocket’s past, present and, assuming a midsummer inaugural flight, its near-term future

LA PLATA, Maryland — Martin Sion became chief executive of ArianeGroup, prime contractor for Europe’s future Ariane 6 heavy-lift vehicle and owner of the MaiaSpace startup small-rocket developer, in April 2023, when European governments’ exasperation with Ariane 6’s cost overruns and delays was peaking.

Things have calmed down since. The planned midsummer inaugural flight, announced in December, has not moved. Vehicle testing has continued with no major issues.
