Airbus says its new software-defined OneSat could revamp the satellite telecom industry

PARIS — Buoyed by the its anchor-customer contract with Inmarsat, Airbus Defence and Space sees its OneSat software-defined satellite product line as potentially creating a new industry in satellite leasing along the lines of the commercial airline industry.

“Since these satellites are not tailor-made for a given operator or application, there could be a second-hand market,” said Nicolas Chamussy, Airbus’s outing head of space systems. “It might not be large, since there are nowhere near as many satellites as commercial aircraft.
