PARIS — The European Space Agency (ESA), faced with resistance in some member nations, has withdrawn a proposal for a 20% increase in spending on space science missions for the coming three years.
The 20% proposal, while ambitious on its face, would have done nothing more than to allow the space-science budget to catch up to the increased GDP of ESA member nations. Science spending is tied to ESA nations’ GDP but the exact spending amounts must win unanimous consent among ESA’s 22 member states.
